Founded in October 1978, APIR is a Private Institution of Social Solidarity, non-profit, recognized as being of Public Utility and holding the status of a Non-Governmental Organization for People with Disabilities. It operates nationwide and is regarded as the representative of Portuguese kidney disease patients.
It is an active member of the Implementation and Monitoring Committee for the National Strategy for Chronic Kidney Disease and a founding member of the European Kidney Patients’ Federation.
APIR has as its main objectives social, psychological, and informational support, as well as defending the rights, benefits, and interests of Portuguese kidney disease patients, with particular emphasis on the right to life, work, and social integration.
Many of the benefits that kidney disease patients enjoy today are, to a large extent, the result of the efforts that APIR has made with the responsible entities. Furthermore, it develops local and national initiatives and projects for the prevention of kidney disease, the promotion of information, and the improvement of the quality of life of individuals affected by this pathology and their families.
APIR is all of us!
