The Lisbon Central University Hospital Center, E.P.E. (CHULC) is an integrated healthcare unit, consisting of six hospitals located in the city of Lisbon: São José Hospital, Curry Cabral Hospital, Santa Marta Hospital, Santo António dos Capuchos Hospital, Dona Estefânia Hospital, and Dr. Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital.
CHULC, E.P.E.’s mission is to provide specialized healthcare in coordination with other healthcare providers integrated into the National Health Service (SNS). CHULC, E.P.E. ensures that each patient receives care corresponding to their needs, following best clinical practices and efficiently utilizing available resources, also encompassing research, teaching, prevention, and continuity of care, prioritizing the patient.
Currently, CHULC, E.P.E. has 17 recognized Reference Centers, which are: Refractory Epilepsy, Pediatric Oncology, Cochlear Implants, Hereditary Metabolic Diseases, Cystic Fibrosis; Lung Transplant, Structural Interventional Cardiology, Congenital Heart Diseases, Heart Transplant, ECMO, Pancreas Transplant, Liver Transplant, Kidney Transplant, Rectal Cancer, Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Cancer, Interventional Neuroradiology for Cerebrovascular Disease, and Congenital Coagulopathies. These centers focus their activities on delivering specialized care to patients with specific conditions, utilizing the most modern human and technical resources available, ensuring accessibility, effectiveness, safety, and excellence in the care provided, adhering to the highest ethical and scientific standards, thus enabling postgraduate training and scientific research within their respective medical fields.
Regarding Clinical Research, the Research Center was established with the mission to promote quality research in a sustainable and organized manner across the hospital units that are part of CHULC, E.P.E. Founded in 2009, the Research Center supports all CHULC, E.P.E. professionals involved in health research. It is recognized that research and innovation enhance the fields of Medicine and Biology, Mental Health, Sociology, Education, and Biomedical Innovation, positively impacting the quality of care provided to patients.
