Local Health Unit of the Northeast, EPE

The Local Health Unit of the Northeast, EPE (ULSNE, EPE), a public enterprise within the state sector, was established with the publication of Decree-Law No. 67 on June 2, 2011, incorporating the Northeast Hospital Center, EPE (Bragança Hospital Unit, Macedo de Cavaleiros Hospital Unit, and Mirandela Hospital Unit) and the Northeast Health Center Group, which included all the health centers in the Bragança district and the Vila Nova de Foz Côa Health Center that was integrated in 2014 into the Guarda Local Health Unit, EPE. Covering a territorial area of approximately 6600 km², the ULSNE comprises three Hospital Units and 14 Health Centers, one in each municipal seat, except in Mirandela and Bragança, which respectively have two health centers.

Taking on the social responsibility of contributing, in a sustainable and humanistic manner, to the delivery of quality healthcare, ULSNE has invested heavily in training and research empowerment in the healthcare sector, guided by a dynamic of innovation and development. Collaboration with higher education institutions has been a fundamental lever for developing synergies through partnerships that result in research projects such as those outlined below: “GreenHealth: Digital strategies and biological asset-based approaches to improving well-being and promoting green health” (Norte-01-0145-FEDER-000042), “BioFirEx (PCIF/SSO/0017/2018): A biomarker panel for firefighter health and safety monitoring,” “PandIA – Management of confinement situations based on municipal and social information,” the AI 4 COVID-19 Project: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Public Administration to bolster efforts against COVID-19 and future pandemics - 2020 (DSAIPA/AI/0088/2020), “Respiratory rehabilitation program for ambulatory COPD patients,” “Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 infection in Northeast Portugal: developing knowledge and tools for better disease management (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-072562),” and Scientific and Technological Research and Development Projects (IC&DT: Testing with Science and Solidarity Program).
